TECHNICAL SPECS
TECHNICAL FEATURES TO LOOK FOR IN POWER QUALITY SYSTEMS:
Clamping Voltage
This tells you what voltage will cause the surge suppressor to shunt electricity to the ground line. A lower clamping voltage indicates better protection. Most surge suppressors have a clamping voltage at 300 – 600 volts, but damage can begin to occur at levels much lower than these. The UtiliGuard® Power Quality System clamps at 130 volts, just above the 120-volt sine wave, where most of the transient activity takes place.
Low Resistance Earth Grounding
A pure ground to earth provides an optimal pathway to send harmful electrical surges and transients out of and away from the building, maximizing protection of equipment. While the building’s safety ground may often be bonded to structural building steel or a water main pipe, the UtiliGuard® Power Quality System will utilize the fastest and lowest resistance ground directly to the earth. Our systems include earth ground enhancement to 10 ohms or less, providing the cleanest path for surge elimination and improved power quality within the facility.
Response Time
A rapid response time is essential since surges and spikes move through power lines in microseconds. The faster the response time, the greater protection you receive. Most surge suppressors have a clamping speed of 3-4 nanoseconds (millionths of a second) but many surges travel at picoseconds (trillionths of a second). The UtiliGuard® System clamps at picoseconds, 85 trillions of a second, which is instantaneous by today’s standards.
Facility Wide Protection
To incur full facility protection, your system should have model specific surge protection devices strategically placed at key locations throughout your facility. Many surge suppressors are either point of use or on the main panel to protect equipment from outside hits. Model specific UtiliGuard® units are installed by licensed electricians at the service entrance panel, distribution panels, branch panel locations and unprotected disconnects. The UtiliGuard Power Quality System provides facility wide protection against external and internal surges.
Performance Guarantees
Manufacturer Warranties and Guarantees vary greatly and define the extent to which the maker stands behind its product claims of performance. The UtiliGuard® Power Quality System comes with unparalleled written certifications. First, an energy savings of 20% for business and 10% for residence is guaranteed in writing. Second, a $100,000 connected equipment warranty accompanies every unit on every panel to replace or repair equipment losses in case of product failure. And third, there is a lifetime warranty with every UtiliGuard® model.
